Women’s Football, Yes!

Author: Daniel Durany

There has been a sport that has been growing among females in North Texas. Most guys would probably guess volleyball, basketball, softball or soccer as the sport that has been growing among females, but it is none of those four sports that are mentioned.

Actually most people would think men and only men should play this sport, but women are playing this sport more than ever before known as football.Dallas Desire

There are several women’s football leagues across the United States such as Lingerie Football League, Independent Women’s Football League, and Women’s Football Alliance. Four teams from North Texas out of these three leagues are the Dallas Desire, Lone Star Mustangs, North Texas Knockouts and Dallas Diamonds.

The Dallas Desire is one of ten teams from the Lingerie Football League. This year, the Desire will be playing their home games at the Cotton Bowl Stadium and all of their games will be aired on MTV 2.

Lone Star Mustangs

The Women’s Football Alliance has the Lone Star Mustangs who started their first football season in 2009. In just their second year of existence in the league, Mustangs became league champions finishing with an undefeated record of 10-0. The Mustangs play their home games at Pennington Field in Bedford, TX and co-owned by LynMarie Liberty-Ellington and Mike Ellington. Back in January of 2010, one of the members from the Lone Star Mustangs became very popular instantly when she was on reality TV show, “I want to work for Diddy 2.”

In the Independent Women’s Football League, there will be two teams from North Texas at the start of 2011 football season. The newest team upcoming in the Metroplex is the North Texas Knockouts. The Knockouts team location is in Frisco owned by Lacresia Webster Gay and under her front staff is General Manager, Skye Garrett and Assistant General Manager, Cassidy Hill.

Dallas Diamonds

However, the team mostly familiar to North Texas fans of women’s football is the Dallas Diamonds who started the inaugural season in 2002 while participating in the Women’s Professional League and later moved to IWFL after the 2007 season. This year the Diamonds finished 7-1 during regular season and lost 45-43 to Sacramento Sirens in the conference championship game.

Even though the Diamonds fell short of the championship game, they are still a force to be taken very serious. Since the franchise has been started, the Diamonds have won four championships including three straight years from 2004-2006 in WPL. Their fourth championship occurred in 2008 while in the IWFL.

Mustangs win the National Championship

The Mustangs rally to defeat the Columbus Comets 16-12

August 8, 2010, LonestarMustangs.com–With 4 lead changes, the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) National Championship lived up to the hype. It was a true battle between the best 2 women’s football teams in the Nation. Multiple weapons, a lethal passing attack, quick running backs, and an unbreakable defense describes both the Columbus Comets and the Lone Star Mustangs.

Both teams can score on the ground and in the air. Both teams were in the top 5 in points scored and the top 2 in points allowed. The Mustangs averaged 283 rushing yards per game and 180 passing yards per game. The Comets averaged 235 rushing yards per game and 155 yards per game in the air. This had the makings of a great match-up, and fans were not disappointed.

Early in the first quarter the Comets struck first marching down the field and scoring on a 22 yard pass from Crystal Davis to Kimberly Kleese making it 6-0. This marked the very first time this season that the Lone Star Mustangs trailed to any opponent in 2010.

The Mustangs came back strong with a 32 yard touchdown run by Odessa Jenkins. After Brittany Satterwhite made the two point conversion, the Mustangs took the lead 8-6. This was the first sign of life from the Mustang offense that started with the big game jitters, but was able to calm down and adjust to the movement of the defense.

In the second quarter the Comets struck on the ground with a rushing touchdown by Shelley Gates making it 12 to 8. This was the score at halftime and again the second of the two times the Mustangs have been behind this season.

Although the Mustangs were behind at the half, the demeanor at halftime was not one of defeat, but one of confidence that this team would rise to the occasion as they have throughout the many trials of this season.

The third quarter belonged to both defenses, but a long drive by the Mustangs had the Comets losing the battle of field position. Deep in their own end zone the Comets were forced to punt and two plays later, Oddessa Jenkins earned her second rushing touchdown with 9 minutes left in the game. The 2-point conversion was successful after Brittany Bushman connected with Etta Maytubby giving the Mustangs a 16-12 lead.

The Mustang defense which seemed to get stronger as the game progressed came up big stopping the Comets on the their first of two chances to win the game. The defensive line kept pressure on the QB and caused a few forced throws by the Comets.

With 1 minute left in the game, the WFA MVP of the League, Odessa Jenkins intercepted the ball on the 41 yard line, stopping the Comets drive and securing the Lone Star Mustangs place in women’s football history. Congratulations to the Lone Star Mustangs, WFA National Champions!

DFW, TX – July 17, 2010–The Lone Star Mustangs defeated the Las Vegas Showgirlz 8-6 to
win the American Conference Championship of the Women’s Football Alliance. They will
travel back to Las Vegas for the big game against the Columbus Comets of Ohio on July
31st!

The Mustangs’ single touchdown came from the one they call “Yellow Shoes” Odessa
Jenkins. Brittany Satterwhite added the two points that ended up being the deciding factor
in the game. Casey Ray-Tribble had an interception early in the game and Stuff Spencer
sealed the deal by intercepting a pass with 1:40 left on the clock and the Showgirlz were
driving. With the exception of one big play from the Showgirlz, the Mustangs’ Black Shirt
defense was able to shut down the passing game when it counted.

With this victory, the Mustangs move to 10-0 on the season and have only one game
left on their schedule against the Columbus Comets for all of the marbles!

Support your Lone Star Mustangs in their effort to get to and win the championship game!

Mustangs Move to Round Two

Keller, TX – June 26, 2010 – The Lone Star Mustangs defeated the Pacific Warriors 38-14
in the first round of the Women’s Football Alliance 2010 playoffs. This brings the Mustangs
to a record of 8-0 and sets them up for a great match-up versus the Iowa Thunder in Des
Moines on July 10, 2010 at 7 PM.

Mustangs Logo

The Pacific Warriors overcame a lot of adversity just to make it to the game in Keller,
TX. The best laid travel plans of WFA teams often go awry. However, they pulled together
as a team to take on the Mustangs. It was quite obvious from the opening kickoff why the
Pacific Warriors and Mustangs were in the playoffs. There was a lot of hard hitting and
tough battles happening on every play. While injuries were minimal, it is certain that the
bumps and bruises from this game will be visible for the next two weeks.

The Mustangs continued their stingy ways on the Black Shirt Defense holding the
Pacific Warriors well below their average 30 points per game through the regular season.
It took a great team effort on the part of the Mustangs as the Pacific Warriors brought a
huge offensive line and excellent running back to do battle.

The Mustangs Nasty Offense also continued its normal ways by posting 38 points
against the Warriors. The Mustangs showed their diversity by playing with both speed and
power on the ground and an effective air attack.

The Mustangs look forward to another great playoff game against the Iowa Thunder!

Final Regular Season Game sets tone for Playoffs.

Your browser may not support display of this image. The Diamonds left Kansas City in April with a loss on their schedule but a sense of urgency. They knew what they would need to do to prepare for a rematch with the 2009 Champion Tribe come May 22. It would be a rematch they would be prepare hard for.

The last time the two Titans did battle, QB Jenny Schmidt led her KC team to a 28-21 victory in the final minutes of the game and connected several times with the nights favorite WR target, #14 Regan Campbell. It was a long ride to KC and an even longer ride home. Dallas hopes to return the somber favor when KC comes to town next Saturday night.

Dallas will counteract with longtime veteran QB, #14 Monica Foster and her arsenal of offensive talent including fan favorites Jessica Springer #46, Rachel May #82 and Dani Lynn Welniak. Look to see rookies Tiffany Hill #4 and Tan Champion #22 step up as well.

The Tribe and Diamonds are on a similar path this season. The Diamonds have only given up 49 points all season in comparison to the 31 points the Tribe have given up against opposing teams. Kansas City suffered their first loss May 1 against the Chicago Force in one of the closest games of the season 12-14. All three teams are in the Western Conference, Midwest division and vying for first place and top seeding in the playoffs.

This is the Diamonds final regular season home game and you know the intensity will be elevated to playoff status. Neither team wants to add another loss to their record. Both want the momentum going into the playoffs. The kickoff is scheduled for 3pm in the afternoon and we will see if the Texas heat will play a part in the matchup. May isn’t always the most predictable but you can bet this will be the hottest matchup of the week.

Diamonds to Induct Players into Ring of Honor.

Four time League Champions, the Dallas Diamonds are set to unveil their Ring of Honor at the final home game of the regular season. Voting is over for the first year of the Ring of Honor and inductees will be announced May 22, 2010. Join us for the celebration as your 2010 Dallas Diamonds defend the dynasty and try to avenge their only loss of the season, against the Kansas City Tribe.

To be eligible a Nominee must have been in the Diamonds organization for 3 seasons in the capacity of player, coach, administrative or medical staff, and retired for 2 seasons prior to the season of induction.

The ceremony with include a presentation of a Ring of Honor banner displayed at all home games, a plaque denoting Ring of Honor Status and a special Inductee polo shirt.

The Diamonds home stadium is Pennington field, located at 1501 Central Drive in Bedford Texas . Kick off is at 3pm. From more information and tickets visit www.dallasdiamondsfootball.com or www.iwflsports.com or call 817-690-3126.

Lone Star Mustangs 2010 Schedule

Mustangs helmet

The Lone Star Mustangs are getting ready for the 2010 season.  The Mustangs were successful in their first year, and they will be looking to make a playoff run.  The Mustangs will have to replace All American Defensive End Ebony Jones who won the reality show “I Want to Work for Diddy.”

You can learn more about the Mustangs who compete in the Women’s Football Alliance by visiting their website.

2010 Schedule

Ebony Wants to Work for Diddy

Our friend Ebony Jones is a contestant on the reality show “I Want to Work for Diddy.” If you watch the show, be sure to vote for Ebony. I am not sure what that will do for the All-American defensive end for the Lone Star Mustangs should she win. Maybe Diddy will let her play next year when the season rolls around.
