Dallas Diesel returns to action this season

The Dallas Diesel, who took 2010 off, is set to return to action this season.

The Diesel will compete in the World Football League once again in attempt to win another championship.

The Diesel is one of the area’s most famous and successful team.  The original coach and founder, Jewell Portwood is still a part of the scenes for the Diesel, but the coaching has since been turned over to former Diesel star Jackie Bridges.

Bridges and the Diesel made it to the WFL Championship game in 2009 losing to Oklahoma City.

The Diesel schedule looks unfamiliar as they take on new teams including the DFW Heat.

The Diesel will kick off 2011 on June 4th against the Central Texas Gorillas.

Update

I received notice that the Diesel will be playing in the Gridiron Development League.   There is not word yet as to if the schedule below will stay the same or change.   Stay tuned!

Diesel Lose to the Thunder

The Dallas Diesel’s run to the WFL championship was cut short Saturday night as they ran in to what might arguably be the best semi pro football team in the country.  The Oklahoma Thunder beat the Diesel 43-12 in the WFL World Bowl.

Diesel Heads to the World Bowl

First it was the Fort Worth Avengers who went to and won the TUFL Championship, now the Metroplex is on the verge of a second semi pro football championship.

The Dallas Diesel defeated the Iowa Sharks 20-10 last night to punch their ticket to the WFL World Bowl III.   The Diesel will face the top seed in the WFL playoffs, the Oklahoma Thunder who defeated the Austin Gamebreakers 101-6.

The game was played in Iowa sending the Diesel on a 14 hour drive.  The drive on the chartered bus was worth the trip as the Diesel overcame an early 10-0 deficit to claim the second spot in the World Bowl.

When asked about the trip to Iowa, Diesel running back Canoya Jefferson said after last week’s game, “To get where we want to go, we’ve got make that trip.”

Now the trip includes going to Tulsa for the WFL championship game.  The Diesel have a shot a second championship in four years.  Can the Diesel bring back to the Metroplex a second semi pro football championship in 2009?

Diesel Steam Past Kaos

The Dallas Diesel will move on in the World Football League playoffs after a 34-14 victory over the Kansas Kaos. The win will most likely send the Diesel to Iowa to play the Sharks.

The Diesel got off to a slow start Saturday night not scoring until 9:04 left in the second quarter. Both teams struggled to move the ball, and when they did, they were unable to finish with a score.

“We have a tendency to start our train out a little slow,” said Diesel coach Jackie Bridges after the game. “We do know that playing against the better teams, that ain’t going to cut it. We have to start out from the word ‘go’, and we haven’t been doing that lately, but hopefully we can get it rolling [next week].”

For the Diesel, the running game once again was the strength of the team as running back Canoya “Coco” Jefferson scored two touchdowns. “They were a pretty tough defense, they were physical. But hey, you know, I’m a physical runner,” Jefferson said after the game. “I just try to take advantage of my power, my quickness and speed. I feel like I’m the total package, and I feel like I showed that here tonight.”

With 4:21 left in the second quarter, Jefferson scored his second touchdown putting the Diesel up 14-0. However, the scoring wasn’t over. The Kaos used a two-minute drill to move the ball down the field, and with 1:12 left in the half, got on the scoreboard making it 14-7.

Not to be outdone, the Diesel took advantage of a 75 yard kick-off return by Richard Morris putting the ball on the Kaos 10 yard line with 58 seconds left in the half. The Kaos dug in to keep the Diesel out of the end-zone, but the Diesel connected on a field goal to make it 17-7 at half time.

The second half was a little more exciting from the beginning. After a series of punts, Glen Johnson intercepted a Kaos pass returning the ball to the Kaos 15 yard line with 11:18 left in the third quarter. However, the Diesel was turned back on a turnover, squandering an opportunity to put distance between themselves and the Kaos. However, later in the third quarter, the Diesel got their chance gain as quarterback Trey Fields found an open Richard Morris with 3:25 left making the score 24-7.

Coco scored two touchdowns for the Diesel

The Diesel were able to receive more opportunities from the Kaos to get their final two touchdowns. With 2:28 left in the third quarter, the Diesel’s Rodrick Brown blocked a Kaos punt giving the Diesel the ball at the Kansas’ 16 yard line. Brown had just missed several punts all night even getting a partial block earlier. The Diesel wasted little time scoring as Fields hooked up with Chris Anderson at 1:31 left in the third giving the Diesel a 31-7 lead.

The Kaos scored with 11:25 in the fourth quarter making the score 31-14 Diesel. However, the Diesel extended the score with 7:08 left in the game when they kicked a field goal making the score 34-14. Finally, with a little over six minutes left in the game, Johnson intercepted a half back pass putting the game away for the Diesel and securing an appearance in the second round of the WFL Playoffs.

Diesel to Ride the Train to Playoffs

After losing their first game of the season to the Austin Gamebreakers, the Dallas Diesel bounced back to beat the Bay Area Gamblers 49-20 on Saturday, August 8 at Clark Stadium.  The Diesel had already wrapped up the number one seed out of the South Division of the WFL before playing the non-league opponent.

The Diesel will be looking to win their second championship in four years as they enter the WFL playoffs on Saturday, August 15th, 7 p.m. against the Kansas Kaos at Clark Stadium in Plano.

The eventful year has not kept the Diesel from the playoffs, and they are steaming down the tracks to a possible WFL Championship.

The Diesel are led by All Stars Trey Fields (QB), Deshawn Perkins (RB), Dante Runnells (OL), Blake Garrison (OL), Mike Larry (DL), Keshawn Dorsey (LB), Marcus Stiggers (DB), and Derek Wash (P).

Coach Portwood told me that any semi-pro or minor league football player that wears his jersey to the game will get in for $5.  The Diesel will need a big crowd to keep the train rolling down the tracks!

In the News

If you haven’t seen it, check out the story in the Dallas Observer about the Dallas Diesel.  One of their journalists actually suited up with the Diesel to get an inside look at semi pro football.  It is a very interesting read.  Click below to read the article.

Dallas Diesel Steams Toward the Playoffs

While the Dallas Diesel have been successful on the field this year, off the field they have encountered scheduling problems.  It started for owner Jewell Portwood in May when the Port City Jaguars chose to play a TUFL playoff game rather than a scheduled game against the Diesel.

“They [the World Football League] should have made them [the Jaguars] choose,” Portwood told me by phone.

If that was all that would happen, the Diesel could recover from a lost game, but three weeks later, a scheduled game against the Houston Cardinal was cancelled.  The recent storms had put another wammy on the schedule.  The Diesel would lose that game too.

Following that game, the Diesel played back-to-back games with Austin teams, the Gamebreakers and the Vipers, picking up victories in each contest.  And then, on cue, another game was lost win the Southeast Texas Demons forfeited the game on July 11.

Portwood blames the economy on some of the games lost.

“I’ve never seen anything like it [the forfeits],” he said after explaining he has been involved with semi-pro football for 20 years.

The Diesel beat the Texas Bulldogs the next week, and then, the following week, the Texas Sharks were a no-show.  If the WFL calls the game a forfeit, that will be three forfeits on the Diesel schedule and one Did Not Play (DNP).  The DNP game was against the Cardinal, who is not a league team, therefore, makes no difference in their playoff standing.

As of earlier this week, the Diesel stands as the third seed in the WFL, but the first tie-breaker comes down to points scored.  With three forfeits on the schedule, it would severely hurt the Diesel’s shot at a top seed for the playoffs.  Forfeited games result in only two points for the winner.

The Diesel will start their run toward the WFL Championship on August 15 after games with the Gamebreakers and the Bay Area Gamblers.  Maybe then, they will get the play the games on the schedule.

The Diesel will return to Clark Stadium in Plano for their final game of the season, August 8 against the Bay Area Gamblers at 7:00 p.m.
