Sonny Clark’s voice has to be hoarse. With 73 points, the voice of the Wranglers on the Couch Potato Sports Show found himself hollering “Touchdowwwn Allen Wranglerrrrrrrrs!” many times over.

New Mexico may have the name Stars, but it was the Wranglers defense who were the stars. In a game, arena football, that usually sees basketball type scores, the Wranglers defense held the New Mexico Stars to 9 points.

The Wranglers defense held the Stars offense to 2.5 yards per play, had 2 interceptions, 7 sacks and held the Stars to 26% on third down. The Stars went for it on 6 fourth downs converting only one.

Offensively, once again, Maurice Avery showed why he is one of the best in the Indoor Football League going on a stretch of three straight touchdowns, 12, 3 and 14 yards, in the first half from QB Casey Printers. Avery would finish the night with 6 receptions for 61 yards, 3 touchdown catches, 1-for-1 passing for 40 yards and a touchdown. Avery is one of the most versatile players in the league.

A David Pino field goal at the end of the first half, along with a Darius Fudge rushing touchdown at the start set the halftime score at 31-0, and this game was never in doubt.

The Wranglers even got a touchdown on special teams when Ramonce Taylor answered the lone Stars touchdown by returning the kickoff 55 yards for a touchdown. Pino was perfect on extra points to go with his field goal.

Terrell Owens lead all receivers catching 6 passes for 76 yards and one touchdown while Luke McArdle caught 2 passes for 64 yards and 2 touchdowns. Taylor added a touchdown catch for 17 yards.

The Wranglers will have a bye this coming week, but will return to action with two straight home games on May 19th and 26th.

The win leaves the Wranglers 6-3 on the year and still in the hunt for the playoffs.

Allen Wranglers Move in a New Direction

Parting ways with Pimmel, and making plans for the future

ALLEN, TX: Following the teams second consecutive loss this weekend, making the team 5-3, as a mutual agreement both the team and Head Coach Pat Pimmell have decided to go in different directions. The team wishes Coach Pimmell the best success for his future.

The team ownership has already begun the process of identifying replacement candidates for this position. “We are determined to find a coach that will be as a remarkable as our fans deserve”, stated team President Tommy Benizio. Though the team realizes the urgency to do so, we recognize that accomplishing our goal of tremendous success can take time.

Without a Head Coach going into this weekends game against New Mexico, the team has confidently asked defensive coordinator, Quinn Cairo and Offensive Coordinator, Dixie Wooten to lead this team together. Both Cairo and Wooten understand the great demand and are more than willing to step up to the plate.

Coach Cairo began his coaching career with the Amarillo Dusters in 2004; he served as a defensive assistant, secondary coach and defensive coordinator in his seasons with the Dusters. He spent the 2009 season as the defensive coordinator for the Corpus Christi Sharks (AF2) before returning to Amarillo for the 2010 season with the Amarillo Venom. Cairo played college football at the University of Wisconsin. Cairo was a member of the 1997 Minnesota Vikings before playing with the Toronto Argonauts (CFL) and the Grand Rapids Rampage (AFL).

Coach Wooten a Houston Texas native earned his Associate degree at Cisco Jr College. In 2011,he joined the Southeast Prep season as the wide reciever coach. Wooten is no stranger to the indoor football game, as he has spent several years as quaterback for teams in the former Intense Football League and the present Indoor Football League. Most recently Coach Wooten spent time with the Nebraska Danger, and in 2009 and 2010 he was the quarter back for the Wichita Wild where he earned Player of the Week honors, and the Adam Pringle Award.

Team Owner Jon Frankel said, “We are pleased to have such great leaders on our coaching staff, that we know we can depend on in a time like this, and are confident they will be what we need during our search for a replacement.”

Be sure to join the Allen Wranglers for the game this Saturday, May 5 at the Allen Event Center, where the Wranglers will host the New Mexico Stars. To come support and cheer on the Wranglers to a big win, call our office for tickets at 972-912-3131.

Wranglers take long road to land in Allen

Darius Fudge

Darius Fudge is the IFL's leading rusher for the Wranglers

The Allen Wranglers are nestled in the heart of Allen, TX, based out of the Allen Events Center. The center is located in the middle of a suburban mall, The Village at Allen, a great place for a family to come enjoy a football game, or a hockey game.

The setting is beautiful, and the town seems to be squarely behind the football team as they are with the Allen Americans hockey team. Local business have decided to promote their products at each game of, arguably, one of the highest profile teams in arena football not in the AFL.

The Wranglers have added legends to the front office and, maybe, a future NFL Hall of Famer on the field in Terrell Owens. Drew Pearson, General Manager of the Wranglers, who is a legend among Cowboys fans, still has a chance to make it into the Hall of Fame and was recently inducted into the Cowboys Ring of Honor.

Early Beginnings

All of this is just a shadow of where this franchise was just a couple of years ago. The Wranglers were the Arkansas Diamonds and playing in the 18,000 plus Verizon Arena in North Little Rock, AR to just about 1,500 people. The franchise had been renamed from the Arkansas Twisters who set attendance records during its early years with the AFL2.

Then owner, Jim Smith, packed his goods and left town, unable to get enough “fans in the stands” a little over a year after taking over with two other co-owners.

Verizon Arena

The Twisters/Diamonds played in the 18,000 + seat Verizon Arena

Circumstances certainly weren’t the most helpful for Smith as he saw the dwindling attendance set in. First, the California Angels affiliate, the Arkansas Travelers, were able to get a nice new stadium built, just two blocks down, to make going to the ballpark for Spring baseball fans more enjoyable.

Next, the Arkansas Razorbacks baseball team became a powerhouse hosting Regional rounds in the College Baseball World Series in Fayetteville.

Winning baseball gives fans something else to do in the Spring, and there just wasn’t enough to get fans to Verizon Arena. Further, the novelty of having Arena football in the state had worn off with many fans and then, Verizon bought out Alltel who had the naming rights to the arena.

Alltel was an ardent supporter of the old Arkansas Twisters, but Smith did not receive the same from Verizon. Verizon chose not to sponsor the Diamonds and, thus, the franchise suffered from the large price tag of playing in the arena.

So, the Wranglers go back to the days when it was once called the Arkansas Twisters in the AFL2. The road continued when the Twisters was ready to play again, but the AFL had gone out of business causing a ripple effect all the way down to the AFL2. When several teams from the AFL2 decided to start the AFL1, the Twisters decided to go to the Indoor Football League.

Actually, the Twisters originally decided to go with the AFL1, but later backed out deciding the price tag was too high. The IFL seemed to be a great fit as the Twisters would play several teams from Texas.

Diamonds Helmet

The Twisters changed their name to the Diamonds

However, there was the issue of name. The Twisters was owned by the Arena Football League. The team would not be able to keep the name. Therefore, Smith and the franchise had a contest to name the team, and, just a few weeks before the season started, the team was renamed the Diamonds.

The Diamonds were pretty good. They had a stifling defense, but the offense never seemed to gain momentum. The team went throughout the season winning games by very un-arena-football-like scores before signing veteran quarterback Brian Jones.

With Jones in the saddle at QB, the Diamonds went all the way to the Conference Championship. The team almost seemed destined to win a championship, and many of the veteran players were playing, seemingly, only for a ring.

On to Allen

With the move to Allen, Smith decided that yet another name change, would be appropriate for the new Texas team. The franchise, with the help of the city, held–you guessed it–a contest to name the not-so-new team. Fans chose the Wranglers, and he began rustling up a football team.

Smith signed a 10 year lease which would keep the Wranglers in one spot for a decade.

The Wranglers, like the Diamonds the year before, were good losing in the Conference Championship game, once again.

However, before the season was over, something happened to change the direction of the franchise.

Late in the 2011 football season, Sunjack Football, LLC became the new owners of the Allen Wranglers. Sunjack Football, LLC is a partnership of Jon Frankel and Michael Wilson. The duo took over as the Wranglers were playing for the post season.

Wranglers bring in Terrell Owens

Few really new what would happen with Frankel and Wilson in charge, but in late 2011, they made a bold move by trying lure NFL star Terrell Owens to Allen to play for the Wranglers. The move included letting him be a part owner of the team, and in early 2012, the deal was finalized and number 81 would be playing for the Wranglers.

Owens, who was recovering from surgery, was never picked up by an NFL football team for the 2011-2012 NFL season, so, he decided he would show the football world he something left. He did not disappoint as he caught three passes for 53 yards and three touchdowns in his first game for the Wranglers.

Sunjack Football, LLC also shocked the IFL by luring away the league commissioner Tommy Benizio who has an extensive background in semi-pro sports and was a founding member of the Indoor Football League which was once called the Intense Football League.

One of Benizio’s first interviews on the job was on the dfwfootball radio show (about 76 minutes in the show) as he talked about how excited he was to be in Allen and with the Wranglers organization.

A recent trip by the dfwfootball team by Chase Rader, Brad McClendon and myself was invaluable in seeing the franchise up close. We were very impressed with the Allen Events Center which we were told by Brittany Wynn, team Public Relations Coordinator, held about 6,500 fans. On that night, about 4,500 fans show up to see the Wranglers score 86 points, more than any of the teams playing in the NCAA College Basketball Final Four that same evening.

The crowd was very involved in the activities, Terrell Owens was clearly a fan favorite, the Allen Wranglers Cheerleaders were on top of their game and the team was one of the most explosive we’ve seen in a long time.

The Nebraska Danger who came into town, was a very formidable opponent, but in the end the Wranglers had too many weapons. Darius Fudge is quickly becoming a fan favorite as the leading rusher in the IFL, and Maurice Avery who filled in at QB for injured starter Casey Printers.

Avery who is a Wrangler receiver, played double duty and ended up being named IFL Player of the Week for his performance. Avery accounted for four touchdowns, one rushing, one receiving and two passing.

Players with Texas ties include:

  • Jeremy Brown, WR — Texas A&M
  • Aquainius Frazier, DB — East Texas Baptist
  • David Pino, K — University of Texas
  • Casey Printers, QB — TCU
  • Dwayne Slay, DB — Texas Tech
  • Romance Taylor, RB/WR — University of Texas
  • Aaron Turner, OL — West Texas A&M
  • Tony Washington, OL — Abilene Christian

Wranglers will add to its success -- Photo by Brad McClenden

Allen, TX: The Allen Wranglers announced today, at a press conference at the team’s practice facility the Blue Sky Sports Center that they have filled out the leadership team for the organization, adding a new team President and two new Vice Presidents.

Joining the team in the role of team President and Co-Owner is Tommy Benizio. Benizio joins the Wranglers organization following a four year stint as the Indoor Football League’s first Commissioner. Over the course of his time as Commissioner the league grew in both strength and stability. Prior to being named Commissioner, Benizio was the owner and operator of both the Intense Football League and the Odessa Roughnecks for five seasons, winning Franchise of the Year and Executive of the Year awards for his work with the team.

Benizio brings over two decades of experience in the operation of professional minor league sports franchises, getting his start in the early 1990′s as a player for the ECHL’s Roanoke Valley Rampage. Following his brief professional hockey career, he took a position in the front office of the ECHL’s Roanoke team. From that point on he worked hard at every position he held, while moving through organizations in Dayton, OH, Baton Rouge, LA, Tucson, AZ, El Paso, TX, and Knoxville, TN.

It was during his second stint with the team in Roanoke that Benizio served as a founding member of the af2 while operating both the hockey and football franchises. “I am pleased to add Tommy as a partner with the Wranglers and as a leader to spearhead our operations.”, stated team owner Jon Frankel.

Allen Wranglers

Allen Wranglers

Benizio’s first order of business was to hire two professionals who could assist him in fulfilling his visions for the team. First, the Wranglers new Vice President of Sales, Barney Welch brings 18 years of sales experience to the organization. Welch got his first job in sports as a member of the Odessa Roughnecks in 2004 as the Assistant Director of Sales, eventually moving up to the position of Director of Operations.

Prior to the 2008 season Welch accepted the position of General Manager with the Centex Barracudas of the IFL, a position he held through the season before becoming the General Manager of the Abilene Ruff Riders in 2009. Following brief stints with both the River City Rage and Omaha Beef, Welch returned to Odessa to work in the oil fields, prior to joining the Wranglers and jumping back in the world of professional sports. Welch brings years of Game Operations experience, winning the league’s Game Ops of the Year award in 2007.

Joining the Wranglers as the Vice President of Operations is Charlie Hildbold. Hildbold broke into the sports business in 2005 as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates front office. As a member of the Outbound Ticket Sales Department, Hildbold was one of the top sales people in the department and was hired on by the Pensacola Ice Pilots of the ECHL in September 2006 as a full-time Account Executive. In the spring of 2007, Hildbold joined the Columbus Catfish of the South Atlantic League, an A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

After serving as the team’s Ticket and Box Office Manager for the season he was hired by Tommy Benizio in Odessa as the Roughnecks Director of Marketing and Promotions.

Following two seasons in Odessa, including the 2008 season in which he won Game Operations of the Year, Hildbold moved on to Richmond, VA, where he launched the IFL’s Richmond Revolution franchise. The 2010 season saw the Revolution win theFranchise of the Year award and Media Relations of the Year award, following a 13-1 season.

“I feel blessed to have both Charlie and Barney join us as we begin efforts to serve the community and provide a great product to our fans.”, said Benizio, “Both bring tremendous talent and character to our organization and I am excited about the future.” With sights set on the future, the ownership and new management teams of the Wranglers move forward with great anticipation of success both on and off the field.

Wranglers Add Courtney Abbott

Today the Allen Wranglers are proud to announce, a HUGE addition to the teams’ offensive line. Courtney Abbott (6’9”, 340 lbs.) continues his success in the IFL, as he joins the Allen Wranglers half way through the season.

Abbott was acquired through a trade with the Cedar Rapids Titans, for future considerations. He has been recognized throughout the league for his very physical ability, and the intimidation he brings as he steps onto the field.

Abbott was a known standout Offensive Lineman while he played for Florida State University, where he spent the latter part of his college career and graduated from in 2006. In 2007, he joined the Odessa Roughnecks who were at the time in the Intense Football League, where he spent three seasons under Coach Chris Williams. During the 2010 season, Abbott started with the West Michigan Thunderhawks and then finished playing the remainder of the season with the Kent Predators.

Casey Printers

In 2011, he was traded to the Lacrosse Spartans, who became the Cedar Rapids Titans in 2012, all with the Indoor Football League. While with the Predators Abbott was a big part of the success in both the running and passing game for the team, by allowing the team to average 42.6 points per game, and 223 yards per game.

The reason he has been such a big threat to teams, is because of his capability to play both sides of the line. In Odessa, Abbott recorded 1.5 tackles on defense in 2007, and one tackle on defense in 2008.

The Allen Wranglers are no stranger to former Odessa Roughneck players, having the IFL’s 2012 Offensive Player of the Week for week 6, Maurice Avery playing for the team.

“Having a guy like Courtney is great because of his size, his talent, and being a veteran to the Indoor Football League, just gives our team one more weapon to utilize for the remainder of the season!” stated Head Coach Pat Pimmell. “I’m excited to have him on our side, and fortunate we don’t have to be the ones trying to get through him.”

The Allen Wranglers have also added three other former Roughnecks to the team’s front office staff. Tommy Benizio, was announced as the Wranglers new President and Co-Owner; Barney Welch, was announced as the Wranglers new Vice President of Sales and Marketing; and Charlie Hildbold, was announced as the Wranglers new Vice President of Operations.

Be sure to join the Allen Wranglers for the game this Saturday, April 14th at the Allen Event Center, where the Wranglers will host the 2011 IFL Champions, the Sioux Falls Storm. To come support and cheer on the Wranglers to a big win, call our office for tickets at 972-912-3131.
