The Lone Star Mustangs completed a very successful innaugural season with a three game sweep of the H-Town Cyclones on Saturday night, 31-0. The victory gives the Mustangs their sixth victory of the year. Two wins were by forfeit over the East Texas Saberkats, but the Mustangs defeated the Cyclones, the defending league champs, three times this year, and they also defeated the Austin Outlaws, the division champs, in their last game on May 30.
The Mustangs were led by former North Texas Fury quarterback Jennifer Hull. In fact, the Mustangs inherited almost the entire Fury roster after the team folded including such stand-outs as Joy Newkirk.
The Mustangs also found rookie contributors such as defensive stand-outs defensive tackle Alex Harvey, defensive end Ebony Jones and free safety Daniela Ottaiano.
Heading in to the Outlaws game, head coach Mike Ellington and his staff changed offenive philosophies to a power-run oriented attack using the “Big Dogs” Brittany Satterwhite, Shug Fossis, and Stephanie Wakefield. The three combined to control the clock and eat up yardage against the Outlaws. Ellington also employed the use of tight ends Etta Maytubby and Yo Grant to help keep drives alive and ultimately provide touchdown catches.
