Cowboys season ends with looming questions

Well, it looks as though my boundless optimism just wasn’t enough to carry the Cowpokes this year. The ‘Boys got shaken down by the Giants and this inglorious season has now come to an end. There were some obvious dark spots on the year but also some bright ones.

Let’s start with the bad.

Some of these Cowboys need to go. Namely on defense. As much as I like Keith Brooking and Bradie James, it’s time for a change. I think Brooking will retire and James still has some gas in the tank but isn’t the Bradie of a few years ago. And with the emergence of Sean Lee and the potential of a Bruce Carter and Victor Butler, the ‘Boys need to clear some cap space and retool.

Oh, I can’t believe I almost forgot about Anthony Spencer. It was interesting while it lasted, but see ya later Mr. Spencer. Anthony had a better year than previous, but still he underachieved. We can do better.

Now on to the secondary. It’s painful to say, but there isn’t one secondary player who I look at and think, “now that’s a keeper.” Having said that, I think Gerald Sensabaugh should stay. He had a solid year overall.

I also think Barry Church needs to be back. He seemed to be emerging in Rob Ryan’s scheme until forced out by injury.

Everyone else is suspect to me. Sorry to say this T-New, but you must go too. Why, you ask? For being too erratic and injury prone your whole career, not to mention your looming age and large salary. Once again, we can do better.

Getting headache – must move on.

Let’s take a look at the bright spots shall we.

The emergence of DeMarco Murray has put the pokes running back situation in a very good spot. And, with Laurent Robinson, we have a surprising third reciever. It’s unknown for sure, however, if he will be back though. I think the Boys will find a way to bring him back if they’re smart.

“Are they (smart),” you ask? Well, I’m not sure how to answer that question, so I’ll plead the fifth.

I think also that the line situation is on solid ground although it could stand a little upgrade and depth. Tyron Smith had a nice rookie year which should be improved upon.

“What about the coaching situation,” you ask? Some want Garrett to go. Some even want Ryan to go. I say they both should stay.

Garrett is still very much on a learning curve and I believe the mistakes and bad judgements will taper down, and Ryan has only had one year. Let’s keep some continuity there. It’s an underrated element these days.

Having said this, they both need to seriously look at mistakes that were made and improve upon them this offseason, which i think they will.

Finally, on to Jerry. Jerry, Jerry, Jerry. I think it’s pretty much a consensus in Cowboy-land now that Jerry is not a very good GM. He’s an excellent owner, but not a GM. To be barely over .500 in the last 16 years is not a good resume for any GM.

However, it doesn’t look like he’ll be giving over the reigns any time soon, so the more input he recieves from the rest of the organization, the better.

There you have it Cowboy fans. I could get a little more in-depth, but there’s the issue of that headache. Let’s hope the boys make the right moves to upgrade this coming offseason so we can be optimistic again.

If not, my trademark optimism might have to be traded in for one of those half empty glass thingies.

The Cowboys 2011 Season: the Good, the Bad and the not so Good

By Todd E. Jones

Todd E. JonesWhat went right for the Dallas Cowboys this season?  That may be what some of you are wondering.  After all, they missed the playoffs again, and fans have gone yet another year without an NFL Championship.

Most want to fire Jerry Jones as the General Manager.  That’s understandable.  He’s a great owner, but his football knowledge is a little shaky.  However, you might argue, he may not be the worst GM in the NFL.

The Good

Laurent Robinson — He emerged as a credible threat for the Cowboys giving them three dangerous receivers. He makes plays and is too difficult to cover for a nickel or safety.

Tony Romo — He played hurt most of the year. First it was the ribs, then it was his hand. Is there any doubt that he wants to win, badly? Further, he improved as the year went in protecting the ball while maintaining his production. He is finally maturing as an NFL quarterback. A Super Bowl is just a matter of time for Romo, but will it be with the Cowboys?

DeMarco Murray — The rookie was a sensation until his injury. The Cowboys have a great 1-2 punch with he and Felix Jones. The question is, “Who will be the Cowboys’ third string running back next season?”

Sean Lee — There is not enough room to talk about how impressive Lee has been for the Cowboys this season. He simply makes plays. He shows up wherever the ball lands.

Jay Ratliff and DeMarcus Ware — Along with Lee, these two are the backbone of the Cowboys defense. Everyone else is subject to being replaced. Ware and Ratliff made the Pro Bowl. The Cowboys need to get these guys some help on defense.

Kicking Game

The Cowboys have found some kickers. Dan Bailey impressed all year long. Take away the incident when his own coach iced him and he had a stellar year for the Cowboys, even winning games for them. Matt McBriar is one of the best punters in the league, but when he was injured, the Cowboys found a suitable replacement in Chris Jones. Who will be the punter next season?

The Bad

The Secondary — Is there anyone in the secondary that should stay? Really. They simply couldn’t cover anyone. The Cowboys need to go to work on their secondary this off-season, and I am not sure anyone has earned the right to stay.

Offensive Line — Down the stretch, they couldn’t keep Romo protected. Rookie Tyron Smith stepped in and may have been the best on the line this season. Even the usually reliable Doug Free had his problems. This line lacked killer instinct when the Cowboys’ season hung in the balance against the Giants. They either need some extra motivation or some new blood.

The Not-So Good

Coaching Staff – I am not anti-Garrett. He had the Cowboys on the verge of a playoff birth with one game to go, and that is an improvement on last year. Garrett made some gaffes including icing his own kicker earlier this season. Really? He will get better. This is his first time as the head coach, and he improved all season long. As far is Rob Ryan, he got all he could get out of this defense. He needs personal help.

Backups — The Cowboys did not have a third string running back for weeks after they let Tashard Choice go. That is not the best idea in the NFL. Most of the season either Felix Jones or DeMarco Murray was hurt. They finally decided to bring in Sammy Morris with a couple of games to go. Not having someone available might have cost them a game and a playoff birth.

As far as the quarterback goes, they need to make a decision on the second string and stick with it. If they keep John Kitna around, he will have to be the second string QB, however, if McGee is the second string QB, they might want to draft a “sleeper” QB in the draft much like they did with Romo several years ago.

Melissa Kellerman — The Cowboys blew a chance to have a positive PR story when Jason Witten fell in to the arms of Kellerman in the Thanksgiving Day game. Kellerman was very good-natured by the incident on Twitter prompting a viral-type following for the Cowboys cheerleader. Then, inexplicilbly, she removed her account. Later, she stated she was just taking a break, but you don’t remove your Twitter account to take a break. Either she was overwhelmed by the response and took it down, or she was instructed to do so. Somehow, she able to get her account back, with the help of the Cowboys, no doubt. The Cowboys could have used this as a bold PR move letting Kellerman inherit being the face of the Cowboys Cheerleaders. They whiffed.

All in all, this was another entertaining Valley Ranch season.  This is still America’s Team. They just need to be an elite America’s Team.

Well my friends, it comes down to week 17 of this NFL season for the Cowboys to grab a playoff birth. If you’ll remember, I said early on that this team would be around .500 heading into the final weeks and how they performed then would determine if they made the playoffs.

Well here we are, a showdown with the Giants in New York.

I’m just glad it isn’t a showdown with  the Eagles! They showed that we don’t match up well with them this year. The ‘Boys got handily beat again last week 20-7 by the Philly bunch.  And to anyone spazzing about Tony Romo’s Hand, calm down! All is okay and he seems to be just fine.

These ‘Boys can beat these Giants and should have beat them the first time. It will be tougher in New York but can be done.

And, as a sidenote, can ya’ll believe T-Ro didn’t get the nod as the third NFC quarterback in the Pro Bowl?! Dang fan voting! Eli Manning nabbed the third spot and word has it that Romo would get the nod should anyone not go.

Tony beat Eli in almost every category this year and has a passer rating, almost 10 points higher. On top of that, the final game has yet to be played and it will be even more of a travesty if Romo again out-duels Manning and the Cowboys win.

Congrats to DeMarcus Ware and Jay Ratliff who did make the Pro Bowl. Well done sirs. The ‘Boys will no doubt have to play a better defensive game this time around, at least in the second half. I believe they’re up to the task but must show a fire and grit from snap one.

If they can get past the G-Men, the Pokes would play either Detroit or Atlanta, both winnable games. But, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. This will be a knock down drag out and it will take the ‘Boys full attention to win.

Tony beat Eli in almost every category this year and has a passer rating, almost 10 points higher. On top of that, the final game has yet to be played and it will be even more of a travesty if Romo again out-duels Manning and the Cowboys win.

I’m predicting a Cowboys victory 27-26. Strange score I know, but let’s see what happens, shall we?

Hopefully after the dust has settled at Giants Stadium, we’ll be headed to playoff town and dancing in the streets. Okay, dancing in the streets is a little extreme, but you know what I mean. If the opposite happens, well, let’s just say it’ll be a downer.

Other choice words come to mind, but I’ll keep them to myself being a gentleman and all.

So come on Cowboys! Get this win and keep us relevant for at least another week!

A safe and happy new year to everyone! See you in 2012, cheers!

Whew, got win number eight in the bag. One down, two more to go.

And, can you believe it? No last second field goal needed!

Now on to Philly. Actually, it’s a home game.

Regardless, I love cheesesteaks, and the Liberty Bell, and brotherly love, but that’s all I like about Philadelphia.

Because of the Eagles, I can’t even stand the color green. Unless you’re talking about money of course. Now this game will NOT be a repeat of the earlier game!

I won’t guarantee a Cowboy victory, But I will guarantee that it will not go down like last time when the ‘Boys got thoroughly spanked.

This will be a good game so make sure you’ve got everything ready; the nachos, the wings, the whole nine yards. And save some for me will ya!

The boys can possibly clinch the division with a win depending on how the G-men do. They play the Jets so let’s cross our fingers shall we.

Hopefully the season won’t come down to week 17.

I don’t need anymore ulcers this year!

Everyone have a wonderful Christmas and hopefully the Boys will give us a W for a present.

Now I’m off to enjoy a cheesesteak. Cheers!

Well, even though it seems to have become a fixture in this year’s arsenal, I still haven’t quite gotten used to this ‘cardiac’ thing. I’m sure most of you think the same. It is especially irksome when it ends up in a loss.

This is, of course, is what we just witnessed this past weekend as the Giants came back to beat the Cowboys 37-34. But, unlike the last loss, I have less people to blame for this debacle.

The defense is what cost us this time, and they will even readily admit so. You could say that a smidgen of guilt belongs to the kicking team as they allowed a block late, but I prefer to let it slide seeing as how it shouldn’t have come down to that anyway.

Mr. Romo, well done sir. You shined and had an excellent game, as did the rest of the offense. We had the G-Men dead to rights and then……well, I really don’t want to talk about it as I would like to refrain from incurring another ulcer.

All i know now is that the Cowboys cannot afford to lose from here on out, starting this weekend with Tampa, then with Philly, and of course ending the year with the Giants.

The Giants could make it alot easier by losing a game or two, but we can’t bank on that. Our account is too tapped.

Making matters worse is the loss of DeMarco Murray. Sammy Morris was signed to spell Felix Jones but that isn’t too comforting (no offense Sammy).

Do I still have hope for this year? Of course, this is ‘me’ we’re talking about. Is it close to the edge? Once again, of course, and the ‘Boys had better take care of business if they are to keep from falling off that edge.

My game ball this week goes to Tony Romo as he had an excellent game throwing for over 300 yards, 4 touchdowns, and NO interceptions.

Does anyone notice now that our Mr. Romo has a passer rating that is now over 100?!

And, even though he is still in fourth in the passer ratings (not too shabby), he is very close to Tom Brady and Drew Brees and could potentially catch them in this department.

But, as we all can probably agree, we’ll take more wins regardless.

Don’t give up on this team yet folks.

It ain’t over til the fat lady sings as they say and hopefully we won’t be having a concert any time soon.

Cowboys capture another mistake-prone loss

Wow, I don’t know where to start. Should i start with how the Cowboys offense did so little against a suspect Cardinals D? Or should I go with the ever popular choice of Jason Garrett’s decision making at the end and Dan Bailey’s two misses?

I will say this, that coach Garrett’s decision to call a timeout while his kicker is drilling a 49 yarder cost the ‘Boys the game.

Also costing them the game was kicker Dan Bailey finally coming down to earth. Had he made either his kick earlier in the game or the re-kick at the end, we would have a big fat W.

We can also lay some blame in two other areas; the offense for not scoring enough altogether and the defense for allowing that ridiculous run for a touchdown in overtime that gave the Cards the win. Well, I think that pretty much covers the whole team doesn’t it?

That’s why it blows my mind how some have spent all week focusing there venom on only one of the above mentioned factors in this (here we go again) loss. Thank God the ‘Boys still have the lead over the G-Men but very precariously. Like a boulder dangling on the precipice just waiting for someone to come by and give it the slightest nudge.

Well, at least the formula is getting simpler, WIN! Beat the Giants or else. It appears that whichever of the two that wins the division will be the only NFC East rep in the playoffs.

So just go out there and win Cowboys!

By the way, I spoke of hoping to not be eating crow after the game if the Cowboys lost. Well, let’s just say that i am not a crow fan! It took everything I had to choke that stuff down! I must have brushed my teeth a hundred times afterward. Wow that stuffs disgusting!

I also said Miles Austin was going to play. My bad, because I jumped the gun assuming he would play when it was never said for sure. But i am happy to say i’m pretty sure he’ll be in action this week. Lets hope so, and maybe the ‘Boys can get the score above the teens.

I will not be making any predictions this week due to my intense fear of possibly having to dine on crow afterwards.

Seriously, it realy is gross! I would say to try it for yourself but I wouldn’t wish it on you fine folks. Let’s go Cowboys!

It’s almost Christmas and I like early presents.

I don’t even need the bow on top, just the win, thank you!

Division title within reach for the Dallas Cowboys

As the Thanksgiving day game wore on I resisted the urge to guzzle pepto or huddle in the corner biting my nails and mumbling to myself. After all, who wants that pepto aftertaste when they’re about to consume there fifth turkey leg?

No mint turkey for me thank you very much! And as for huddling in the corner, I decided to (as always) hang out hope that the ‘Boys would pull it out. My patient optimism was rewarded, my friends, as Tony Romo and company pulled out yet another squeaker from the jaws of death and put themselves in front in the division.

I have to say that Dan Bailey is my new hero. They should start a comic book with him as the superhero. Now that I think about it, maybe that’s not a good idea.

“So Bobby, what was this week’s issue about?”

“Oh, same thing as last week, and every week. He hit his field goals.”

Boooring!

Ha, I crack myself up! But, I digress.

With the Giants continuing to implode and the ‘Boys gelling more each week, the division title is the Cowboys to lose. To make you smile even more, Miles should be back this week, yet another weapon to add to Tony’s arsenal.

Now if the O-line can play solid, we’ll have us a well-oiled scoring machine.

Warning – Arizona will not lie down! Actually, I see the Cardinals much like i do the Dolphins. Not so good a record, but not a bad team. With playmakers like Larry Fitzgerald, Beanie Wells(who ran for almost 200 yards last week) and Patrick Peterson, the Cards can play.

I see the Cowboys winning again with two scenarios.

One, it will be another down to the wire game or two, a close game that gets blown open in the second half. The two possible scores  are Cowboys 20-16 or Cowboys 30-16.

I hope I’m not eating crow after these predictions. I was , after all, 13 for 16 last week. Not bad huh?

Besides, crow probably has a horrible aftertaste also and isn’t nearly as good as turkey.  At least, I would assume so.

So please, no pepto and no crow for me thank you. Just a nice slice of W and I’ll be fine.

Melissa Kellerman has become America’s Sweetheart

Melissa Kellerman

DallasCowboysCheerleaders.com

By Todd E. Jones

Todd E. JonesYou remember Miss Kellerman don’t you?  She’s the pretty Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader who helped Jason Witten break his fall on Thanksgiving Day during the Cowboys dramatic victory over the Miami Dolphins.  Well, of course, she’s very pretty, and we know, if she is a Cowboys Cheerleader, she can dance. And dance well!

Kellerman became famous when the Cowboys Tight End caught a pass and was forced out of bounds and right in to the Cheerleader causing both to go to the ground.  It almost looked as if Witten was using Kellerman to break his fall and cameras caught a very surprised cheerleader who later tweeted about the fall.  (See video here)

This was all in good fun, of course, and Kellerman became an  internet sensation when it was revealed that she was the, uh, um, victim.  Now, this aspiring teacher is one of the most popular searches online.  However, for our beloved Cowboys public relations team, it was somewhat of an inconvenience, although I’m not sure why.  As reported earlier today, the Cowboys pulled Kellerman’s twitter account.

The true sports journalist that I am, ahem, I researched twitter, and, sure enough, Kellerman’s twitter account, which was @MelissaRae, no longer exists.  Now, the hashtag #MelissaRae is trending.  Okay, so it may not be “trending” yet, but there are plenty of folks out there using the hashtag along with #FreeMelissa and #FreeMelisaRae.

Melissa, of course, has a face, and a pretty one!  The face of the Cowboys organization is different depending on who you ask, but Jerry Jones comes to mind.  No matter how much you love or hate Jones, his face just isn’t as pretty as Kellerman’s.  So, Kellerman seems to be winning the PR battle.

My hunch is that this decision was made in the belly of the Cowboys’ PR machine.  It really is a bad decision.  There was absolutely no harm coming from the event, and the PR machine could have gotten with Kellerman to guide her through what was sure to be a barrage of publicity to help give the Cowboys a more positive image.  All that has been done with this move has made the Cowboys look like a censoring organization.

I want to offer the Cowboys three ways that they can re-emerge in a good light.

1.  Set up a Cowboys sanctioned twitter account for Kellerman.

Coach her on the use of social media as an official member of its organization.  They can call in Shama Kabani for some tips.  Further, while Shama is there, she might want to consult the Cowboys PR machine on the effective use of social media.

2.  Send Kellerman to New York!

That’s right, send her to New York.  While she is there, she can capitalize on her new fame and be interviewed by Good Morning America, the Today show and Early Show on CBS.  Then, at night, she could go on the David Letterman Show and offer the night’s Top Ten list.  Maybe, it could be something like, “The Top Ten Ways to not break an NFL star’s fall on the sidelines.”

3.  Let Kellerman be a regular contributor on Dfwfootball.net.

This is not a risk!  Let her come on and write about the Cowboys to complement what Roger does for us here.  Also, make sure we have plenty of pictures we can post on here so that our readers can see the kind of wonderful human being that she is.  I’ve seen a blog post by Kellerman, and she knows how to make it work.

So, Melissa Kellerman, if you are reading this article, and you want to do some writing about being a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader, feel free to contact me.  I will be happy to give you a platform to talk all things Cowboys and/or Cowboys Cheerleaders on our website.

Cowboys edge out the Skins

Okay, so it didn’t take long to swing back into nail-biting action did it? The good news is that the ‘Boys pulled it out and that Dan Bailey’s streak is really getting impressive. Bailey kicked the game winner in overtime to give the Cowboys the win and propel them into first place in the NFC east.

Tony Romo had another nice game throwing for three TD’s and no interceptions. DeMarco Murray’s average suffered a bit but he helped keep the ‘Skins defense honest. Felix Jones returned to make a decent contribution in limited action, and the Boys made the plays when needed to win.

I will say that I was expecting a more dominant game by the Cowboys but I’m certainly not too surprised by the Redskins hanging close. These two longtime division rivals know each other well and always come to play.

To help our cause, the Giants lost  as both matchups with them loom ever closer, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.

We go into the Thursday Thanksgiving game to play a hot, that’s right, I said hot, Miami Dolphins team who has won three straight. Dallas cannot afford to take this team lightly.

They need to bring it from the get-go or risk ending their own three game winning streak.

Shop Black Friday Door Busters at FansEdge.com For Sales Up To 50% off!

It looks at this point that the NFC has eight legitimate playoff contenders fighting for the six playoff spots with only two spots virtually locked in. The Boys will have to compete with New York, New Orleans, Chicago, Detroit, and Atlanta for the remaing four spots.

We’ve already played Detroit and lost so a tiebreaker would give them the nod for a wildcard.

Well I’m here to say phooey with the wildcard! Let’s go out there and win this division by gum! Did I just say “by gum”? I guess I did, but that’s material for another conversation I suppose.

Get your turkeys thawing, and your plans mapped out so come this Thursday, we can watch the Cowboys subdue the flippers and inch closer to a playoff spot.

Happy Thanksgiving and here’s to everyone having a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving day!

Go Cowboys!
