Colleges
There are three college programs in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. All three are from the NCAA Bowl Championship Subdivsion.
The TCU Horned Frogs have a recent history of success with Gary Patterson as the head frog. Last year the Horned Frogs finished number 7 in the BCS polls.
The SMU Mustangs have been successful in their own right, but not in recent years. After an NCAA mandated “death penaly” in the late 1980’s followed by a second season with self imposed non-season, the Ponies have struggled to find their way back to a winning season. Two years ago, the Mustang boosters dug deep in to their pockets to hire June Jones away from Hawaii to bring back glory to the SMU program.
The University of North Texas began Sun Belt Conference play with four straight conference championships and four straight trips to the New Orleans bowl, the conference tie-in for the champion. However, the past four years have been unkind to the Mean Green. Three years ago, UNT decided to hire former UNT assistant coach and the decorated Southlake Carroll High School’s head coach Todd Dodge rebuild the program. The 2009 season will see Dodge’s son Riley take over at quarterback to help his dad turn around the program.
