All-DFW Football Team represented well in 2012 NFL Draft

By Chase Rader

Chase Rader

Sandwiched in between the Indianapolis Colts QB draft picks at # 1, Andrew Luck, and Mr. Irrelevant, Chandler Harnish out of Northern Illinois, there were 251 young men (depending on how you view Brandon Weeden) that realized their dream of being drafted into the NFL.

The All-DFW Football Team, that was published December 14-18th, had 6 players off our post season team picked in rounds 3, 5, and 7.

Guard Josh LeRibeus (6’3”, 312lbs) from SMU was first off the board at pick number 71 overall, and 8th in the third round. LeRibeus will go to the Washington Redskins where he’ll help provide protection for RGIII. LeRibeus is the highest drafted pony since 1987. LeRibeus started 28 games over 4 years.

Taylor Thompson from SMU was the first representative from the All-DFW team on Saturday, going 145th overall and 10th in the fifth round to the Tennessee Titans. Thompson (6’5”, 282lbs) was drafted as a tight end but selected as a defensive end for dfwfootball.net. Thompson started 43 straight games and 49 overall. Thompson ended his career with 139 total tackles along with 18 sacks.

Tank Carder

Two picks after Thompson saw the All-DFW football defensive player of the year, Tank Carder, go to the Buffalo Bills. TCU’s Carder (6’2” 236lbs) was selected as the 147th player taken, 12th in the fifth round. Carder amassed plenty of recognition in his four years at TCU. Carder was a two-time All-American, two-time MWC defensive player of the year, and the 2011 Rose Bowl MVP. Carder tallied 228 tackles in his college career.

SMU cornerback Richard Crawford (5’11” 189lbs) will join LeRibeus in Washington next year. Crawford was selected 213th overall and 6th in the final round. Crawford was a first team All-Conference USA selection as a punt returner. He ended his two seasons at SMU with 101 tackles and 6 interceptions.

The Chicago Bears got a steal with the 220th pick overall and the 13th in the seventh round in TCU’s Greg McCoy. The All-American return specialist and cornerback McCoy (5’9”, 178lbs) was the All-DFW special teams player of the year as well. McCoy was ranked sixth in the nation and led the Mountain West in kickoff return yardage.

Rounding out the All-DFW team selections is SMU’s other guard, Kelvin Beachum (6’2” 303lbs). Beachum was the last pony selected at number 248 overall and 41st in the seventh round to the Pittsburg Steelers. Beachum was a four year starter who was named first team All-Conference USA in the past two seasons.

The four selections for SMU are the most for the school since 1985.

Since Gary Patterson has taken over at TCU, he has had 31 players drafted with an overall of 62 players joining NFL training camps.

All-DFW Football team selections:
Round (round selection, overall selection)
3 (8, 71) Josh LeRibeus, G, SMU – Washington Redskins
5 (10, 145) Taylor Thompson, TE, SMU – Tennessee Titans
5 (12, 147) Tank Carder, LB, TCU – Buffalo Bills
7 (6, 213) Richard Crawford, CB, SMU – Washington Redskins
7 (13, 220) Greg McCoy, CB/KR, TCU – Chicago Bears

What the Cowboys should look for in the 2012 NFL Draft

By Roger Corralez

Roger Corralez

Roger Corralez

Well, it’s that time of year again! You know, the time of year when Jerry and the war crew gather together for some fun in the sun…er, I mean confines of the Deathstar, to commiserate over whom to select to, hopefully, bolster America’s team.

Sadly, in recent years, the ‘fully’ has come up missing from the results. Hopefully this year’s draft extravaganza can turn the tide on that run.

The ‘Boys have 8 picks in the 2012 NFL Draft, ranging from the 14th to 222nd. They have a few different pressing needs with defense being at the top of the list. As far as priority, I’d give secondary and a pass rusher a tie-vote.

I put a quality offensive lineman next. There are several players at all these positions to choose from. Jerry will no doubt feel like he is at Central Market scanning over a huge array of produce to find the ripest pick.

I, myself, find it hard this year to put anyone at the top of the list but i can give you a decent one. And, to start that list, one word – Alabama.

For a team that needs defensive help the most, it certainly makes sense to look to the school that dominated defensively the last several years, and three potentially good NFL quality players are there: Safety Mark Barron, OLB Courtney Upshaw, and CB Dre Kirkpatrick.

Any of these should help upgrade the defense. Many are looking at Barron to be the Cowboys first pick. There have been rumors however of San Diego trading up to the 13th spot and taking him which would mean the Cowboys would have to look elsewhere. Can you imagine D-Ware having a pro bowl caliber pass rusher on the other side of the line? That’s a scary thought for the rest of the league. Upshaw is one candidate there. Others are Melvin Ingram from South Carolina, Michael Brockers out of LSU, Quinton Coples from N.Carolina, Chandler Jones of Syracuse, and Andre Branch from Clemson.

Can you imagine D-Ware having a pro bowl caliber pass rusher on the other side of the line? That’s a scary thought for the rest of the league.

Whew, i told you there were several potential picks! Along with Barron and Kirkpatrick, other potential picks in the secondary include CB Stephen Gilmore out of S.Carolina and safety Harrison Smith from Notre Dame. The O-line prospects are headed by David DeCastro of Stanford whom scouts believe could play any position on the line. Other hopefuls include OT Riley Reiff from Iowa, Cordy Glenn from Georgia, and Mike Adams out of Ohio State.

One name I forgot to mention on the defensive side is OLB Shea McClellin of Boise State. A lot of names, I know. One thing about the draft is that nothing is fullproof or guaranteed.

Another thing we know is that the ‘Boys haven’t had a lot of success in the draft in recent years. Here’s to hoping that changes this year. I won’t bore you with whom I think the Cowboys should take with all of their picks. All of these players and others could be available at different stages for the boys to consider.

Let’s just hope Jerry doesn’t pull a ‘Jerry’ and pick someone at a less pressing position in, let’s say, the first 3 picks. After that I perfectly understand them taking the ‘best player available,’ but with their first few picks they should address the positions that need the most help.

I believe the Cowboys made some good moves this offseason. Corralling CB Brandon Carr was definitely a good move. Terrance Newman’s best days were behind him and he was getting beat deep much too often. The younger Carr should bring more consistency and allow less big plays on that side of the field.

2012 NFL Draft

2012 NFL Draft

Letting go of Brady James and Keith Brooking has allowed for the emergence of Bruce Carter and Victor Butler as well as newcomer Dan Connor. The linebacking core has been transformed into a younger, faster unit, and we all know how important speed is in the NFL.

The changes on the offensive line are hard to evaluate. Did we improve? Only time will tell. Goodbye Laurent Robinson. It was good while it lasted. Maybe the boys can pick a wideout somewhere along the line. Hopefully, another Robinson will emerge to be the third receiver.

Anyway, so far – so good in my book. Let’s just hope that by drafts end we can be even more optimistic about the upcoming year and at the end of it, find ourselves yelling, “how bout them Cowboys!”

Wranglers take long road to land in Allen

Darius Fudge

Darius Fudge is the IFL's leading rusher for the Wranglers

The Allen Wranglers are nestled in the heart of Allen, TX, based out of the Allen Events Center. The center is located in the middle of a suburban mall, The Village at Allen, a great place for a family to come enjoy a football game, or a hockey game.

The setting is beautiful, and the town seems to be squarely behind the football team as they are with the Allen Americans hockey team. Local business have decided to promote their products at each game of, arguably, one of the highest profile teams in arena football not in the AFL.

The Wranglers have added legends to the front office and, maybe, a future NFL Hall of Famer on the field in Terrell Owens. Drew Pearson, General Manager of the Wranglers, who is a legend among Cowboys fans, still has a chance to make it into the Hall of Fame and was recently inducted into the Cowboys Ring of Honor.

Early Beginnings

All of this is just a shadow of where this franchise was just a couple of years ago. The Wranglers were the Arkansas Diamonds and playing in the 18,000 plus Verizon Arena in North Little Rock, AR to just about 1,500 people. The franchise had been renamed from the Arkansas Twisters who set attendance records during its early years with the AFL2.

Then owner, Jim Smith, packed his goods and left town, unable to get enough “fans in the stands” a little over a year after taking over with two other co-owners.

Verizon Arena

The Twisters/Diamonds played in the 18,000 + seat Verizon Arena

Circumstances certainly weren’t the most helpful for Smith as he saw the dwindling attendance set in. First, the California Angels affiliate, the Arkansas Travelers, were able to get a nice new stadium built, just two blocks down, to make going to the ballpark for Spring baseball fans more enjoyable.

Next, the Arkansas Razorbacks baseball team became a powerhouse hosting Regional rounds in the College Baseball World Series in Fayetteville.

Winning baseball gives fans something else to do in the Spring, and there just wasn’t enough to get fans to Verizon Arena. Further, the novelty of having Arena football in the state had worn off with many fans and then, Verizon bought out Alltel who had the naming rights to the arena.

Alltel was an ardent supporter of the old Arkansas Twisters, but Smith did not receive the same from Verizon. Verizon chose not to sponsor the Diamonds and, thus, the franchise suffered from the large price tag of playing in the arena.

So, the Wranglers go back to the days when it was once called the Arkansas Twisters in the AFL2. The road continued when the Twisters was ready to play again, but the AFL had gone out of business causing a ripple effect all the way down to the AFL2. When several teams from the AFL2 decided to start the AFL1, the Twisters decided to go to the Indoor Football League.

Actually, the Twisters originally decided to go with the AFL1, but later backed out deciding the price tag was too high. The IFL seemed to be a great fit as the Twisters would play several teams from Texas.

Diamonds Helmet

The Twisters changed their name to the Diamonds

However, there was the issue of name. The Twisters was owned by the Arena Football League. The team would not be able to keep the name. Therefore, Smith and the franchise had a contest to name the team, and, just a few weeks before the season started, the team was renamed the Diamonds.

The Diamonds were pretty good. They had a stifling defense, but the offense never seemed to gain momentum. The team went throughout the season winning games by very un-arena-football-like scores before signing veteran quarterback Brian Jones.

With Jones in the saddle at QB, the Diamonds went all the way to the Conference Championship. The team almost seemed destined to win a championship, and many of the veteran players were playing, seemingly, only for a ring.

On to Allen

With the move to Allen, Smith decided that yet another name change, would be appropriate for the new Texas team. The franchise, with the help of the city, held–you guessed it–a contest to name the not-so-new team. Fans chose the Wranglers, and he began rustling up a football team.

Smith signed a 10 year lease which would keep the Wranglers in one spot for a decade.

The Wranglers, like the Diamonds the year before, were good losing in the Conference Championship game, once again.

However, before the season was over, something happened to change the direction of the franchise.

Late in the 2011 football season, Sunjack Football, LLC became the new owners of the Allen Wranglers. Sunjack Football, LLC is a partnership of Jon Frankel and Michael Wilson. The duo took over as the Wranglers were playing for the post season.

Wranglers bring in Terrell Owens

Few really new what would happen with Frankel and Wilson in charge, but in late 2011, they made a bold move by trying lure NFL star Terrell Owens to Allen to play for the Wranglers. The move included letting him be a part owner of the team, and in early 2012, the deal was finalized and number 81 would be playing for the Wranglers.

Owens, who was recovering from surgery, was never picked up by an NFL football team for the 2011-2012 NFL season, so, he decided he would show the football world he something left. He did not disappoint as he caught three passes for 53 yards and three touchdowns in his first game for the Wranglers.

Sunjack Football, LLC also shocked the IFL by luring away the league commissioner Tommy Benizio who has an extensive background in semi-pro sports and was a founding member of the Indoor Football League which was once called the Intense Football League.

One of Benizio’s first interviews on the job was on the dfwfootball radio show (about 76 minutes in the show) as he talked about how excited he was to be in Allen and with the Wranglers organization.

A recent trip by the dfwfootball team by Chase Rader, Brad McClendon and myself was invaluable in seeing the franchise up close. We were very impressed with the Allen Events Center which we were told by Brittany Wynn, team Public Relations Coordinator, held about 6,500 fans. On that night, about 4,500 fans show up to see the Wranglers score 86 points, more than any of the teams playing in the NCAA College Basketball Final Four that same evening.

The crowd was very involved in the activities, Terrell Owens was clearly a fan favorite, the Allen Wranglers Cheerleaders were on top of their game and the team was one of the most explosive we’ve seen in a long time.

The Nebraska Danger who came into town, was a very formidable opponent, but in the end the Wranglers had too many weapons. Darius Fudge is quickly becoming a fan favorite as the leading rusher in the IFL, and Maurice Avery who filled in at QB for injured starter Casey Printers.

Avery who is a Wrangler receiver, played double duty and ended up being named IFL Player of the Week for his performance. Avery accounted for four touchdowns, one rushing, one receiving and two passing.

Players with Texas ties include:

  • Jeremy Brown, WR — Texas A&M
  • Aquainius Frazier, DB — East Texas Baptist
  • David Pino, K — University of Texas
  • Casey Printers, QB — TCU
  • Dwayne Slay, DB — Texas Tech
  • Romance Taylor, RB/WR — University of Texas
  • Aaron Turner, OL — West Texas A&M
  • Tony Washington, OL — Abilene Christian

Meet the 2012 North Texas Longhorns Dancers

We are in love with the lovely ladies from the North Texas Longhorns.

There is no doubt about it!

These ladies are beautiful, smart, and, (did I mention beautiful?), well you get the picture.  Or, you will just below all of the text.

Lead by the lovely Ashley Schmid, this first year squad has developed into one of the best semi-pro football dance teams in the North Texas area. They’ve already shown their love for others by participating in a number of community service projects.

And that was all while trying  to learn new, and strenuous routines and get into dancer shape!

The girls are sponsored by Centre for DanceRobert Dombkowski PhotographyPlanet Tan and Palm Beach Tan.

Further, we were fortunate to have them on the dfwfootball radio show a few weeks back.

We hope you enjoy meeting them as much as w did!
