(May 6, 2009) Deep End Sports–The Texas Mavericks have had an up and down season. After starting 2-0, they then lost the next 3 games, but rebounded late to get the top Wild Card seed in The NMLF Playoffs.
Part of the reason for the mid season slump was the loss of QB Nate Nuart with an ankle fracture, an injury he and The Mavs have rebounded from nicely. The key for the Mavericks is RB James Tibbs, who doubles as a return man.
For the NTX Seminoles, the 2009 season has been an emotional one indeed. After a thrilling 28-14 win over the eventual #5 seed ATX Tigers in the opener, The Seminoles struggled offensively in games vs. ETX and Plano, and were dealt a crippling blow when All NMLF WR and pro prospect Jackie Robinson was lost for the season in a game against The WTX Drillers. Then, against the NTX Falcons the ‘Noles lost WR/QB/KR Mike Smith for the season, another crippling blow.
Nothing could prepare them for what happened against the WTX Outlaws in Dallas on April 25th: All Star DE Steven Hickman, 34, died of a massive heart attack at halftime, sending shock waves through the Minor League and Semi pro football world. The ‘Noles re-evaluated, and decided to continue what they had started, after considering cancelling the season, and now find themselves in San Antonio in The NMLF’s Wild Card round.
The ‘Noles will be led by All NMLF RB Darien Propes on offense, and DL Chris Houston on defense. Propes leads the NMLF in rushing with over 900 yards, and is one tough customer. Look for the Seminoles to win a close, emotional game and advance to the second round, where the undefeated, top seed San Antonio Warriors await.
