Mavericks Ready to Win

February 4, 2009 by admin · 2 Comments

After a winless campaign in 2008, the UTA (University of Texas at Arlington) Mavericks Football Club has a new coach and a new direction.  The Mavericks hired Robert Green, a former Southwest High School stand-out from Fort Worth who also played and coached in the Air Force while serving overseas.

Along with the losing record, the Mavericks also experienced a lack credibility in the community while burning bridges with various organizations under the former administration.  The Mavericks have set out to repair some of the damage in the past couple of years Coach Green told me by phone Tuesday night.  Such actions include  community activities including being involved with the Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure.

Another aspect of the program is building relationship with the local high school football coaches.  Coach Green and his staff envision helping potential college football players by giving them an opportunity to develop their skills without losing college eligibility.  A further benefit for those atheletes will be “highlight tapes.”  Coach Green has summoned a friend to tape the games so that tapes will be available for those atheletes looking to pursue a chance to play Division I college football.

In spite of the fact that the Mavericks play in the semi-pro Texas United Football League, the Mavericks are comprised of students at the UTA.  Coach Green emphasizes to his players that “school comes first.”  According to Coach Green, he wants the students to be prepared for life “life after football.”

The Mavericks play at UTA’s Maverick Stadium and practice on the intramural fields at the school.  Most of the expenses are met through player fees and donations.  As of now, the funds are low.
