Avengers Ready to Live the Legacy

The Fort Worth Avengers football team “officially” kicked off the 2009 season on Saturday night, February 7 at the Richland Hills Community Center with a banquet. Several Avengers players, family and friends of the team showed up to enjoy a meal, music, a DJ and getting more acquainted with new members of the team.
The team will enter the season with several rookie coaches among which is head coach Darrel Brummett. Brummett takes over for long-time coach Randy Rowley who remains as an assistant coach for the Avengers.
Joining Brummet will be defensive coordinator Dan Hunt. Hunt has played for several years in semi-pro football throughout the North Texas area. Also, Tim Smith joins the team as the new offensive coordinator. No doubt Smith will benefit from veterans such as quarterback Terry Barber as well as newcommers like Maurice Williams.
The theme for the season is “Living the Legacy,” and it was promoted in words written on the cake as well as a “pep talk” by Rowley. Rowley recounted,

with incredible inspiration, some of the history of the Avengers and what makes the organization special.
Rowley helped start the Avengers about 15 years ago while he was still playing football for the Canadian Football League. Rowley’s own legacy includes a stint as a “replacement player” for the Kansas City Chiefs and years of successful playing and coaching in North Texas.
Rowley, as well as other team leaders, appealed to the sense of family that has been a part of the Avengers team. Over the years, team members have shared the births of children, deaths, and triumphs together. He told the players, especially the new ones, “Once you become an Avenger, you will never be alone for the rest of your life.”
The Avengers will kick off the 2009 season by hosting the UTA Mavericks on February 28. While the Avengers are the defending West Division Champions, they have been moved to the Central Division and are division neighbors with the Hunt County Longhorns who won the TUFL title in 2008.
